Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet Tested the Canon 5D Mark II for 1080HD

21 09 2008

Article by: Gizmodo

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet was one of the first people to get his hands on the most coveted camera on the planet, Canon’s 5D Mark II. He talked to us a bit about the breakneck stills-and-video shoot he put together in just a few hours to see what this camera can really do. You can catch a glimpse of the incredible results here and why Laforet says that it’s the “best camera ever” that will “redefine the industry.” Yes, what you’re looking at are screencaps of the video from his site.

It’s not the camera’s still photography performance that Laforet says is a game-changer, as duly impressive as it is—he says it matches what your “natural eye in can see the worst light” which is “a big deal.” It’s the video, which he says—only half-jokingly—makes him “never want to shoot another still photo.”

You’re only getting a diluted taste of it here. Laforet noted that this DSLR obliterates the video quality of Canon’s dedicated HD XH-A1, especially in low-light. Laforet says that for the first time ever, using a DSLR or any other camera was “not a struggle at all,” even “at night, outside, in a city” which can be the among the most challenging lighting situations of all.

It’s the cost that makes it a revolution, and a boon for indie filmmakers. With $25,000 worth of SLR lenses, Laforet and his small crew were able to perform comparably to what would take at least several hundred thousand dollars worth of motion picture camera lenses (and some of those you can’t even buy).

Laforet is a photographer; he has no professional film experience and had never used the 5D Mark II before, yet was able to storyboard, cast, shoot and edit the clip in just two days, with less than 12 hours notice. In particular he noted that dumping the MPEG-4 video takes way less time than it would with an actual HD camera. The only issue that would stop a person from shooting a TV pilot solely with this camera is sound matching, he says. If that’s covered, you’re gold.

Here’s a leaked YouTube version of the video, which does not do it the justice it deserves, but still looks good:

Mysterious Headless Corpses Found All Over London [pics]

9 07 2008

An anonymous graffiti artist has been attacking London advertisements, with a signature graffiti style.

He or she has been gorily removing heads from well known advertisements such as this year’s blockbuster movie “Sex and the City” the movie.

Kissing couples, beautiful models and aspiring celebs have all come under ‘the East London decapitator’s’ knife; their beautiful heads replaced by bony, blood drenched stumps. His artworks are defined by the media as culture jamming or sub-vertising, which Wikipedia describes as, ‘the practice of making spoofs or parodies of corporate and political advertisements in order to make a statement,” thus their appearance has been predominantly on fashion and film posters such as the recently tagged Uniqlo t-shirt campaign.

Many believe that the works are a ‘head’ start on tackling the visual bombardment of adverts that Londoners recieve each day, Cities such as Sao Paolo, Brazil have already completely banned billboards in a campaign for a ‘New Clean City’ as a reaction against what many saw as outdoor advertising going too far.

As London’s streets continue to overcrowd with adverts, more annoying
Celebrities heads will roll, ALL HAIL, THE DECAPITATOR!

GYRON FS / STAB-C

8 07 2008

The GYRON FS / STAB-C (Gyron Film System / Stabilized Camera) is a unique 5-axis stabilizing camera system which eliminates adverse motion artifacts from pan, tilt and roll. This completely silent system allows an entire range of cameras, from Hi-DEF video to IMAX 15perf/65mm film cameras. It can be used on any type or size of camera crane, camera car, cable support, construction-style telescopic crane, and helicopter work producing stable images throughout a typical 25-500mm (film lens) zoom range*. With advanced notice the system can be upgraded to completely stabilize a 1000mm or greater film lens during aerial or ground work*.

Fully operational in the sitting or hanging mode, the GYRON FS / STAB-C is able to point straight down (please see tilt ranges below), and features adjustable side arms to accommodate many size payloads. The vertical height can shortened for tight shooting or for an extra 15% of Aircraft speed. This system will allow any aircraft to attain 70 knots. If faster airspeeds are required we recommend our SUPER-G which can handle airspeeds up to 120 Knots.

The GYRON FS / STAB-C and all its features are fully controllable via our Advanced Data Link, which can allow the head and control desk to be miles apart. Our Advanced Data Link fully integrates with any microwave, laser, RF, IR, or other communication relay systems on the market.

The utmost in creativity can be attained with the GYRON FS / STAB-C because the roll axis is fully controllable / maneuverable, yet stabilized. It also features Dutch / Tilt compensated steering for operator ease and perfect shots.

This system has proven itself in -30° F weather in the frozen tundra of Northern Canada, as well as in 120° F temperatures in the sand dunes of Namibia. It has been fully drenched with water, frozen with snow and ice, and has operated at multi-G turns of a helicopter. In each of these extreme cases the Gyron FS / Stab-C system has worked perfectly, surpassing expectations every time.

Polecam

7 07 2008

Polecam gives you a crane type shot when you couldn’t get one before either due to restrictive location or budget.

* To put a crane in a boat or a car has always been exclusive to Hollywood – not now!
* The portability of Polecam is always a big winner. With a rig time of 10 minutes and the ability to carry a Polecam as well as an ordinary Betacam unit in an ordinary car makes it unique.
* Polecam is not an essential piece of kit. You can cover a football match with 1 camera so why does Sky Television have up to 20 – the answer is increased production value.

Polecam gives a crane shot when one has ‘NOT’ been able to get one before, whether it be the pit lane of a motor racing circuit (Polecam is the only crane ever to be licensed in a pit lane due to the fact that tripods are forbidden) or a small studio for the shopping channel. It is all about increased production value.

‘Technical Blurb’
Polecam provides smooth, floating jib arm shots, with the ability to relocate with ease. This is due to the fact that Polecam can be attached to the body by way of a harness, which has been designed in conjunction with a registered osteopath to aid weight distribution and portability.
The Polecam can be operated in the harness or on a tripod, with a relocation time in as long as it takes to walk there, be it just a few steps, up some steps or even in & out of a boat.

Much easier than with a conventional jib. The lightweight nature is all due to a radical redesign of the concept of a jib arm, including materials used in construction as well as the latest camera technology.

The rig comes complete with 5 universal, custom wound carbon fibre sections (1 as spare) each measuring over 1m (3’) in length and 4cm (1.6”) in diameter, which provide useable, steady shots during booming. A small FX microphone is also positioned at the end of the boom.
The counterweight arm of the Polecam rig only protrudes to the rear a maximum of 1m (3’) and contains the counterweights, batteries (10Ah), CCU & Interface Unit.

Polecam can be rigged and de-rigged quickly, and is unique in that it requires NO tools in construction. The average rig time is 10 minutes with de-rig time of 5 minutes.

Polecam breaks down into two custom designed bags developed by CP Cases, in the Pro-Bag range (Cordura® by DuPont) with the mast bag having backpack harness capability.

‘More Technical Blurb’

The 3-chip, 750 line resolution mini-camera, with a component/composite output to Digi-beta/Beta SP recorder or microwave link, plus optional SDI converter, is mounted on a custom made, self leveling, miniature pan & tilt unit, with joystick, allowing the camera to be moved quickly and smoothly. The unit also incorporates a mechanical iris drive for the lens, controlled from the joystick itself (or by remote from an OB van).

The whole unit is small enough to drop into a cup of coffee! However, the system can incorporate most mini-cam systems both single & triple chip.

The entire head unit weighs less then 0.5kg (1lb) and is therefore very appealing from a health & safety aspect.

Polecam can also be used from the back of a moving vehicle such as car, jeep, golf buggy, quad bike etc. and even from the back of a motorbike, as well as fixed to any tripod, remote head, stand or dolly system. Viewing of the camera picture is by means of a high quality TFT LCD monitor mounted on the boom. All the cables between the P&T head unit and the rear end pass inside the mast as opposed to being strapped to the outside. This aids rig time as well as protecting the cables themselves.

Polecam can be used in a variety of applications ranging from sport, music, documentary, drama, security & military, corporate and wildlife.
